How much does an AI chatbot cost in India?
The cost of an AI chatbot in India is decided by its scope rather than by a standard price, and the biggest drivers are whether it only answers or also takes actions, which channels it runs on and how much content it must answer from. Languages, integrations, human handover and testing add to the build, while AI model usage and WhatsApp message charges continue after launch.

Search for what an AI chatbot costs and the answers run from a monthly plug-in to a project that takes a studio months. They are not prices for the same thing. "AI chatbot" covers a menu of buttons, an assistant that answers from your own documents, and an agent that books the appointment and updates your CRM.
So this article gives no number. It explains what is being priced, so you can tell whether your chatbot is a small job or a large one and read quotes properly.
First, which of three things are you buying?
| Kind | What it does | What the cost mostly pays for | Where it falls short |
|---|---|---|---|
| Menu or rule-based bot | Follows a flow of buttons someone wrote in advance. | Designing the flows and connecting a channel. Little or no AI usage once live. | Anything nobody scripted. A typed question gets "Sorry, I didn't understand". |
| AI chatbot grounded in your content | Looks up your website, documents and FAQs, then writes a reply from what it found. | Preparing the content, the retrieval layer, the rules for what it must not answer, and testing. | It can explain but cannot act. The booking or the order still happens somewhere else. |
| AI agent that takes actions | Answers from your content, then acts: books the slot, checks an order, updates the CRM, hands over to a person. | Everything above, plus each integration, limits on what it may do, and testing every action. | Every action is a way to be wrong inside your systems, not only in a reply, so it needs the most care. |
Much of the gap between two quotes is the gap between these three, and both quotes can be fair. The full comparison is in AI agent vs chatbot.
What decides the cost of building one
- Channels
- A website chat widget is the usual first deployment. WhatsApp needs Meta's WhatsApp Business API, a registered number and Meta-approved message templates. A voice agent adds speech recognition, a voice and a telephony provider. Each channel is separate work, even when the knowledge behind them is shared.
- How much content there is, and how messy
- Twenty clear pages are a different job from hundreds of PDFs and policies that contradict each other. Resolving the contradictions is often the largest part of the work, because a chatbot will quote whichever version it finds.
- Languages
- Current models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google handle Hindi, Kannada, Tamil and other Indian languages, but quality varies and each language needs its own testing. Customers also type Hindi in the Latin alphabet, mix languages in one message, or ask in Kannada about content that exists only in English.
- Integrations and actions
- Every system it reads from or writes to, such as a booking calendar, the CRM or an order database, is a separate integration with its own failure cases. Reading an order status is simpler than writing a booking; refunding one is harder still.
- Human handover and a staff inbox
- The rule for when it passes a conversation to a person, and an inbox where your team sees every thread and can take over. This decides how a customer is treated when the bot is out of its depth.
- Guardrails and testing
- Rules for what it must refuse, such as medical advice or discounts it cannot authorise, and testing against the questions your customers actually ask, including the awkward ones. Cheap quotes tend to leave this out.
- Analytics and transcripts
- Keeping conversations and showing which questions went unanswered. Without this you cannot improve the chatbot, or tell whether it is working.
- Data privacy and where data is stored
- A chatbot collects personal data from the first message. India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 applies to it: collect what is needed, use it for the purpose it was given, keep it secure. Where conversations are stored and which model provider processes them are design decisions with a cost, not settings for later.
The running costs people forget
- AI model usage. OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and other providers bill by the amount of text their models process, measured in tokens: the question, the content retrieved to answer it and the reply. It grows with the number and length of conversations, and more capable models cost more to run.
- WhatsApp message charges. Meta charges for some WhatsApp Business API messages, depending on who started the conversation and the kind of message, and a Business Solution Provider may add a fee. See what the WhatsApp Business API costs in India.
- Hosting. The server, the index that holds your content and the database that holds transcripts. A voice agent on a phone line adds the telephony provider's call charges.
- Keeping the content current. When prices or policies change, the source must change too; if it answers from your website, updating the site does most of it.
- Reviewing transcripts. Someone has to read conversations, find the questions it handled badly and fix the content or rules. That separates a chatbot that improves from one that drifts.
All of these continue for as long as the chatbot runs. Ask any builder to set them out in writing, with whose account each is billed to; accounts in your own business's name are easier to check and to move.
Why the cheapest chatbot can cost the most
A generic plug-in widget pointed at your website is the cheapest way to have something answering customers. Its cost shows up elsewhere: a confident wrong answer about a price, a promise your staff have to retract, an enquiry that leaves because nobody took over. A lost booking never appears on an invoice.
That does not make simple tools wrong. One is genuinely enough when:
- Customers ask a handful of predictable questions, such as timings, location and how to book, that a clear FAQ page or a short menu answers.
- Volume is low enough for a person to answer every message, with the WhatsApp Business app's quick replies and away messages covering the gaps.
- Nothing it says could cost you money or a customer if it were wrong.
Build more when questions vary, wrong answers are costly or the conversation should end in a booking.
How to compare chatbot quotes
- Check which of the three kinds each quote is for. Quotes for different kinds cannot be compared on price.
- Ask which channels are included, by name, and whether WhatsApp Business API setup and template approvals are.
- Ask what content it will answer from, and who prepares it.
- Ask what happens when it does not know (the answer should be a specific handover rule), and ask to see the test questions.
- Ask for the running costs in writing, and where conversations are stored, for how long and who can read them.
MyFloww quotes every chatbot and agent individually, as a fixed price for a fixed scope, once we understand what it has to answer, what it has to do and where it has to run. How we build them is on AI agents and AI chatbots, with WhatsApp automation for reminders in the same thread and AI automation for the follow-up work.
Questions
Related questions
Is a plug-in AI chatbot enough for a small business?
A plug-in chatbot can be enough when customers ask a few predictable questions and a wrong answer would cost nothing. Once questions vary or the conversation should end in a booking, a chatbot grounded in your content and properly tested is worth building.
What does an AI chatbot cost to run each month?
The monthly cost of running an AI chatbot depends mostly on conversation volume, because the AI provider bills for the amount of text processed; WhatsApp message charges, hosting and the staff time spent reviewing transcripts come on top.
Does a WhatsApp chatbot cost more than a website chatbot?
A WhatsApp chatbot usually costs more to set up, because it needs the WhatsApp Business API, a registered number and Meta-approved message templates, none of which a website widget needs. Its running cost depends on how it is used, since Meta charges for some messages and not others.
It is often still the better first channel in India, because WhatsApp is where customers already reply.
Can an AI chatbot answer in Hindi, Kannada or other Indian languages?
Yes. Current AI models can understand and reply in Hindi, Kannada, Tamil and other Indian languages, but quality varies by language, so each one should be tested with real customer questions before launch.
Who owns the chatbot's conversations and data?
Your business should. The conversations are records of your customers, so agree in writing where they are stored, who can read them, how long they are kept and how you get them out.
