What is AEO, and how is it different from GEO and SEO?
AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — is optimising a page so a system can lift a direct answer out of it and present that answer to someone who never clicks. GEO is the newer term for the same instinct applied to generative AI systems, and SEO is the older discipline of ranking in a list of links. In practice AEO and GEO describe overlapping work, and the difference between them matters far less than the difference between either and SEO.

Three acronyms are currently being sold as three services, and it is worth being straight about how much daylight there actually is between them.
AEO came first, from the era of featured snippets and voice assistants: write so a machine can extract a clean answer. GEO arrived with ChatGPT and Perplexity, and means the same instinct pointed at systems that generate prose rather than quote a box. The work overlaps heavily. Anyone presenting them as two separate engagements with two separate invoices is selling the acronym rather than the discipline.
The three in one table
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it optimises for | A position in a list of links | Being lifted out as the direct answer | Being cited inside a generated answer |
| Where the answer appears | Your page, after a click | A snippet, a knowledge panel, a voice reply | A paragraph written by a model, sometimes with a link |
| Unit of success | A ranking, then a click | The extracted answer being yours | Being named, and named correctly |
| What wins it | Authority, relevance, links, technical quality | A clean, self-contained answer in extractable markup | Extractability plus consistency plus specificity |
| How you check | Rankings and Search Console | Whether the snippet is yours | Asking the models and reading what they say |
Read down the last two columns and the overlap is obvious. Both reward a page that states an answer plainly, in real markup, without making a machine infer it. That is why we treat them as one job with two audiences.
What the zero-click shift actually changed
SEO's implicit bargain was that ranking produced a visit. AEO and GEO both exist because that bargain broke: a growing share of questions are answered without anyone leaving the results page or the chat window.
That has an uncomfortable consequence worth stating plainly. Optimising for extraction sometimes costs you the click and wins you the mention instead. For a business selling a considered purchase — clinic software, a custom build, a treatment course — the mention is usually worth more than the visit, because the person asking has just been told by a system they trust that you are the answer. For a business whose revenue is advertising impressions, it is worth less. Which you are should decide how hard you push.
What actually gets you extracted
- Answer the question in the first sentence
- Complete, self-contained, no run-up. If your opening line is "There are several factors to consider", there is nothing to lift. Every section of this article does it, including this one.
- Match the question form
- People ask questions, so the heading should be the question. A page headed "Our Solutions" answers nothing that anybody typed.
- Use real structures
- A table for a comparison, an ordered list for a process, a definition list for terms. A table faked out of divs is invisible as a table to everything that is not a browser.
- Be specific enough to be worth quoting
- "Affordable pricing" cannot be extracted. "₹1,500 per quarter, or ₹5,000 per year, with the first two months free" can. Specificity is what makes a sentence usable in an answer.
- Say what you are, the same way, everywhere
- Models resolve entities before they recommend them. If two pages describe you differently, you have made yourself harder to identify — and a system that cannot identify you confidently will name a competitor it can.
- Mark it up
- Structured data for the organisation, the services, the prices and the questions, generated from the page content so the two cannot disagree.
Which term to use when hiring
If you are buying, the acronym on the proposal matters less than four questions. Ask them of anyone selling you AEO, GEO or AI SEO.
- What will you change about how our pages are written, specifically?
- How will you make our description of ourselves consistent across the site and off it?
- What will you mark up, and will the markup be generated from the page or maintained separately?
- How will you show me what the models say about us now, and what they say in three months?
An answer to all four describes real work. An answer that leans on the newness of the acronym does not.
Where this leaves SEO
Exactly where it was, and still necessary. An AI system has to find, crawl and trust your pages before it can quote them, and that is SEO's job. Nothing about AEO or GEO removes the need for a fast, crawlable, well-structured site — they add a second audience for the same pages.
The longer treatment of the generative half is in what GEO is and how it differs from SEO, and both jobs are what our SEO and GEO services actually consist of.
Questions
Related questions
What does AEO stand for?
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization — optimising content so a search or AI system can extract a direct answer from it and present that answer to the person asking.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
Very nearly. AEO came from the featured-snippet and voice-assistant era and GEO from the generative AI era, and the work they describe overlaps almost entirely — answer-first writing, real markup, consistent facts.
Treat anyone selling them as two separate engagements with two separate prices with appropriate scepticism.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. An answer engine still has to find, crawl and trust your pages before it can extract anything from them, and that remains SEO's job.
How do I check whether AI systems recommend my business?
Ask them, in the phrasings your customers actually use, and write down what comes back — then repeat it monthly so you can see it move.
This is the genuinely new part of the discipline. No previous era of search allowed you to interview the ranking system directly.
Does being extracted cost me the click?
Sometimes, yes — and for a considered purchase that is usually a good trade, because a mention inside a trusted answer is worth more than an anonymous visit.
It is a worse trade for a business whose revenue depends on page views. Which of the two you are should decide how hard you push.
