Next.js or WordPress: which is better for a business website?

Neither is better for every business: WordPress suits a non-technical team that publishes often and wants ready-made plugins, while Next.js suits a site where mobile speed, a small security surface, control over SEO and custom functionality matter more than a familiar admin screen. A headless setup, with WordPress as the editor behind a Next.js front end, offers some of both at the cost of running two systems.

A note on where this is written from: MyFloww builds websites in hand-written Next.js. That is a reason to read what follows sceptically, and a reason to be precise about where WordPress is the better answer, because there are several cases, and our own Next.js development page already says so for the commonest one.

The two are not quite the same kind of thing. WordPress is a content management system — an editor, a database, themes and plugins — that assembles each page when it is requested, unless a cache serves a stored copy. Next.js is a framework for building websites and web applications in React. It has no admin screen until one is built or connected.

The comparison, factor by factor

WordPress against Next.js for a business website
What decides itWordPressNext.js
Editing contentA familiar editor out of the box. Anyone comfortable with a word processor can publish.Needs a content management system connected to it, or content kept in files.
Speed on a phoneCan be fast with a light theme, few plugins and good hosting. Often is not.Fast by default when pages are prerendered and each ships only the code it needs.
Security and upkeepCore, theme and every plugin need regular updates; an outdated plugin is the usual way in.No plugins and no admin login on the public site, so far less to patch.
SEO and structured dataSEO plugins cover the basics well. Going beyond what they output is harder.Metadata and structured data generated from the content, exactly as the site needs.
Custom featuresA plugin for most common needs; unusual ones mean custom PHP or plugins working around each other.Portals, booking flows, dashboards and integrations built into the same codebase.
Who can maintain itA very large pool of freelancers and agencies across India.A developer who works in React and TypeScript, a smaller pool.

Where WordPress genuinely wins

A team that publishes every day
If several non-technical people add articles, news or listings daily, WordPress's editor, user roles, drafts, scheduling and revision history are mature and familiar. Recreating that elsewhere means paying to get back to where WordPress starts.
The plugin ecosystem
Forms, events, memberships, multilingual content, a WooCommerce shop: for most common features there is a plugin that does a reasonable job today. When the need is common and standard, that is hard to beat on time or cost.
A tight budget
A well-chosen theme with a handful of maintained plugins gets a small business a decent site for far less than a custom build. For a brochure site on a small budget, this is the sensible answer.
A site a local freelancer can look after
WordPress skills are common, so if your developer moves on, finding another is not hard. That continuity has real value for a business with no technical person of its own.

Where Next.js genuinely wins

Speed on a mid-range phone
Pages prerendered into finished HTML, served from a cache, carrying only the JavaScript each one needs: that makes good Core Web Vitals the starting point rather than a clean-up project. Google measures them, and customers on mobile data feel them.
A smaller surface to patch
No plugin directory to monitor, no public login page to defend, and no database queried when a visitor opens a page. Fewer moving parts means fewer things to exploit or break in an update.
Control over SEO and GEO
Titles, canonical tags, sitemaps and structured data generated from the same content the page renders cannot drift apart or be forgotten. Real tables, lists and answer-first copy also help the AI systems that quote websites, which is the subject of what GEO is.
Functionality that is yours
A customer portal, a booking flow tied to your own system or a WhatsApp integration is built into the same codebase, not bolted on through a plugin with its own update schedule. It is also how a website grows into a web application without a rewrite.

Headless WordPress: both, with conditions

A headless setup keeps WordPress as the editor and database, and builds the public site in Next.js, which fetches content through WordPress's REST API or a GraphQL plugin. Editors keep the screen they know, visitors get the faster front end, and the WordPress admin can sit where the public never reaches it.

The costs are usually under-described. There are two systems to host and update. Plugins that change what visitors see — page builders, sliders, form and SEO plugins that output their own markup — mostly stop working, because WordPress no longer draws the page. Previews need setting up, and every new layout is developer work. It makes sense for an organisation with a large content team already in WordPress; for a site that changes a few times a month, a purpose-built headless CMS or content kept with the code is usually simpler.

Four questions that settle it

  1. Who edits the site, and how often? Daily, by several non-technical people, points to WordPress or a headless CMS. A few changes a month points to whichever produces the better site.
  2. What must it do beyond showing pages? Bookings, accounts, payments or integrations with your own systems favour a custom build.
  3. What does a slow or compromised site cost you? If most enquiries arrive from search or ads on a phone, speed and security are revenue, not housekeeping.
  4. Who will look after it in two years? Name the person or the firm. A site nobody is responsible for is a risk on either platform.

If you already have a WordPress site

Do not rebuild it because a framework is fashionable. If the site is fast, ranks and brings in enquiries, spend the money on content and links; why a website is not ranking covers where to look first. If it is slow because of its theme and plugins, nobody can change it safely, or it cannot do what the business now needs, a rebuild is worth pricing.

Moving it need not cost the rankings it has earned. A website redesign and migration done properly keeps every URL or redirects it, carries titles, descriptions and structured data across, and watches Search Console for the weeks after launch. That is how MyFloww builds custom websites in Next.js, and if WordPress is the better fit for what you describe, we will tell you before quoting.

Questions

Related questions

Is Next.js better than WordPress for SEO?

Neither ranks a site on its own; Next.js makes the technical layer easier to get right and keep right, while WordPress with a good SEO plugin covers the basics well enough for most small sites.

Content, internal linking and the authority of the domain still decide rankings. The platform decides whether speed, metadata and structured data are helping or quietly in the way.

Can our team edit a Next.js website without a developer?

Yes, if it is built with a content management system for the parts that change, such as prices, services, articles and team pages.

Changes to layout or functionality still need a developer, which is the real trade-off against WordPress.

Is WordPress secure enough for a business website?

Yes, if it is kept updated, runs a small number of well-maintained plugins, and has strong passwords and two-factor login on every admin account.

WordPress itself is actively maintained. The risk usually comes from outdated or abandoned plugins and themes, and from sites nobody is responsible for updating.

Can a WordPress site be moved to Next.js without losing rankings?

Yes, provided every URL keeps its address or gets a permanent redirect, and the content, titles, descriptions and structured data are carried across rather than rewritten from memory.

Rankings can move for a few weeks after any change of site. What loses them for good is a relaunch that changes every URL and redirects none of them.

Which costs more, a Next.js or a WordPress website?

A WordPress site built from a theme and plugins usually costs less to start, and a Next.js site usually costs more up front, because it is built for your business rather than assembled from parts.

Running costs narrow the gap: premium plugin and theme licences renew, updates take someone's time, and changes to a custom site need a developer. What moves a quote is the number of real pages, the content, any booking or payment flow, the integrations and any migration.
